Jesus' Authority

01-28-2024Weekly ReflectionFr. Aruldoss

Dear People of God,

Good morning to you all. Hope, you are all hale and healthy. I am praying for you all every day. On this fourth Sunday of ordinary time, the Liturgy of Word of God encourages us to listen attentively to Christ who speaks with authority. The readings collectively focus on the recognition and acceptance of divine authority and be obedient to God’s authority.

The first reading from Deuteronomy speaks of a prophet like Moses, emphasizing the importance of heeding true prophetic voices that convey God's will and truth. This theme of authoritative teaching is echoed in the Gospel, where Jesus' teachings are contrasted with those of the scribes.

The Gospel reading of today vividly demonstrates Jesus' divine authority, not just in teaching but also in his power over unclean spirits. He never deceived them or made false claims. Rather, in contrast to the scribes and Pharisees, He taught with authority. This was not based on worldly credentials, or his ability to cite precedents. His only credential was that he is the Son of God. His authority came from his father.

His authority was further displayed when He commanded an unclean spirit to exit a possessed man. They marveled at Jesus' powerful teachings and control over unclean spirits. His authority impresses and amazes the people, revealing him as a figure of divine power and wisdom. The reaction of the congregation in the Gospel to Jesus' exorcism and teaching underlines the theme of recognizing and responding to Christ's power and authority.

So, let us continue to listen to Jesus. Let us pay attention always to the many ways that God comes into our lives. Let us seek to be faithful to the voice of the Lord as it comes to us in Scripture.

Peace be with You! Have a Happy Sunday!!
