Christ, the King

Dear People of God,

Praise the Lord. We celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King today. It was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 in response to growing nationalism and secularism. If we can truly come to know the Lord Jesus as the center of our lives, there is no more room for atheism nor for secularism.

The first reading, from the Second Book of Samuel, tells us about the anointing of David as the king of Israel. David is seen as a symbol of the savior who was yet to come. In today’s gospel, In the gospel, from the cross, Jesus tells the good thief that he will join him in paradise; The kingship of Jesus Christ, The Kingdom of God and Eternity.

Jesus Christ is not a king like the rulers of this world. Jesus Christ is a king who seeks only our good and the good of all. Jesus is a king who guides us from humility, not from power. Jesus has all power and all might and all majesty, but willingly puts all of that aside to become one of us and to sacrifice His life for us. So, we need to learn the following lesson from today’s solemnity;

1) We need to assess our commitment to Christ the King today. As we celebrate the Kingship of Christ today, we belong to his Kingdom only when we try to walk with him, when we try to live our lives fully in the spirit of the Gospel.

2) Today’s Feast of Christ the King reminds us of the great truth that Christ must be in charge of our lives, that we must give him sovereign power over our bodies, our thoughts, our heart and our will.

3) We need to follow Christ the King’s lesson of humble service to the truth. Christ has come to serve and to be of service to others. We are all His children, forming one body. Hence, whatever we do for His children, we do for Him.

On this great Feast of Christ, the King, let us resolve to give him the central place in our lives and promise to obey his commandment of love by sharing what we could with all his needy children.
