Let Us Walk with the Lord

02-06-2022Weekly ReflectionFr. Arul Doss

Dear people of God,

I express my hearty thanks to all those who helped to clean the basement of my Rectory. I also thank Immaculate conception Parish PCCW Ladies for providing a delicious lunch to those who worked there.

Today’s readings present some characters who are called to carry out a mission of proclaiming the Word of God. They all have the same reaction: they feel unworthy, incapable, inadequate.

In the first reading of today says that the Prophet Isaiah was called and we hear his response to that call: "I am not worthy" and Isaiah declares to be a man of unclean lips. Yet, when asked by the Lord, he volunteers to do the work of God. In the Gospel of Luke, we have an account of the call to Simon Peter and other three apostles. Peter asks Jesus to turn away from him because he knows he is a sinner.

The list of statements of unworthiness could continue with the objections of Jeremiah: “Ah, Lord God, I do not know how to speak. I am still young” (Jer 1:6) and Moses: “But, my Lord, never have I been a fluent speaker. I cannot find words to express what I want to say” (Ex 4:10).

Finally, at times we feel like Isaiah, Paul or Peter in today’s readings. We feel so unworthy of our call that we can hardly do anything for the sake of the Gospel. Rightly, we should feel so perhaps because of our inadequacies and fear. However, we should realize that it is God who cleanses us of our sins and makes us worthy to be his messengers. God’s power in our lives is incredible.

Therefore, we are not to be afraid. Rather, we should be docile to the spirit of Jesus Christ. He makes only those who are available worthy and capable for his mission. You and I can become like the Prophet Isaiah, like Saint Paul, like Saint Peter—but only if we choose to walk with God, to open our hearts to belief, to ask the Lord to transform us. Come, let us walk with the Lord.

Have a happy and Blessed Sunday!
