The Centrality of the Paschal Triduum

04-09-2017Weekly ReflectionSeminarian Sam McCarty

Holy Week has arrived. We have ushered it in with palms and the Passion narrative, and now we embark withOur Lord on a journey to Calvary and beyond. As we approach the greatest mysteries of our faith in the Paschal Triduum,it might be helpful to pause for a moment and reflect on the meaning behind these upcoming days.

What’s the time in your life you have felt the most love? The moment, perhaps, when you most knew thatsomeone cared for you. (Actually pause and think about this, I’m not asking rhetorically.) Now briefly consider whenyou have most felt love from God. There’s no wrong answer to this – be careful not to give the answer you think you’resupposed to give (i.e. don’t say “I experience God’s love in the Mass” if that isn’t the case). Now, think of any event weare about to remember this coming week – if one doesn’t spring to mind I suggest turning to the crucifixion, turning toOur Lord on the cross. Finally, consider how that event, that action of Jesus was motivated entirely by love. Think howthat love surpasses anything you have ever known or experienced. This is a radical thought! God’s love for us is literallyinfinite.

Because this reality is difficult to grasp, I invite you to spend the week thinking about it. God’s love for us takescenter stage in a very tangible way over the next seven days. Don’t miss the chance to dive into it!
